About The Clark Side

Long ago, on a cold February 24th, 1988, a young boy was born to a fledgling minister and a stay-at-home mother. He, Benjamin Clark Dickinson, was their firstborn son. However, what should have been a joyous occasion was far more dire, for the baby boy was born with a lethal amount of fluid in his lungs. Neither the minister nor even his wife could hold their child, who was immediately whisked away to the NICU. The minister did what any true minister would do, and prayed. Wracked with worry, for three days, the couple waited. On midnight of the third day, the minister felt his worries melt away into a sense of calm and peace. The couple then returned the next day to check on their child. Their doctors reported that, at midnight on the night prior, they made a checkup. The fluid that had been suffocating the baby boy, the fluid that trained professionals recognized as a critical condition, the fluid that very nearly ended the baby’s life was completely, inexplicably, miraculously gone. Benjamin Clark Dickinson was ready to go home.

Benjamin lived modestly with his family. By his very nature, he was content to play quietly alone. As he grew older, reading and storytelling, in all its forms, captivated him. From newspaper comics, to novels, to movies, to television shows, and video games, anything with a good story to tell was voraciously absorbed. Eventually, Benjamin tried his own hand at writing things, starting with comics. For a few years, the youngster tried to make a comic about a hairy orange cat named Fluffy. But the more comics he drew, the more difficult it became to stay funny. Eventually, Benjamin felt that if he could not keep the comic humorous, then it probably wouldn’t work. And so he began looking elsewhere, entirely dismissing writing as a whole. For years he searched, but nothing felt right. Then the weight of menial employment extracted its toll, year after year. It was always the same toil, just in different places for different people. Meaningless drudgery on top of fruitless searching weighed heavily upon Benjamin. Finally, he reflected on his past. He missed making people laugh and cry and decided it was time for a change…
